weddings and weddings and weddings, oh my!

how is it possible that i'm essentially the first person i know to get married and then suddenly, there are 14 others? i know, we're just at that age, but geez. all day long, there was wedding.

1) i emailed jen a bunch of ideas and calming reminders.
jen is in the "i just got engaged, nothing is decided, everything is possible" stage. i was there for about a week for my wedding. it's kinda fun, but mostly stressful. the whole idea of planning a party for months (years?) hits you. everyone wants to know what you want. theknot.com, magazines, books, and relatives all want to tell you what you want. pick a date. that shuts them up for awhile. pick it semi-randomly. you'll figure it out.

2) i come home for about 15 min. and as we're leaving to go to will and shan's, my phone rings. it's katy. there's a typo on her wedding invitations. her and corey went through the trouble to buy environmentally friendly wedding invitations and she doesn't want to reprint them. what's a girl to do? i don't know if i helped her, but she sounded less upset when we hung up. just disappointed. i felt terrible because she was counting on these people to make things right!
katy is in the end-stage of planning. this involves most things decided and now dealing with people that you loved when you found them and hired them, and now find disappointing in one way or another. that's when you grin at your hubby-to-be and look at your dress and smile. because who knows what will actually happen other than the man and the dress being there?
this lasted for about 2 months with me. katy is way ahead of schedule, compared to where i was. i didn't hit this until april (and she's getting married the same day as us, sunday before memorial day). in this stage, you really just want the wedding to be over. it's not until about 2 weeks before that you get that rush of excitement again. and nerves. i recommend 1/2 zanax daily for the week leading up to the wedding. it's the only way you'll eat. oh, and only take 1/4 on the wedding day. it's the only way i kept from vomiting.

3) i realize at 11:30pm that i missed a call from kathleen at 7. uh-oh....can i deal with more wedding drama? i listen to her message. she wants me to look at a dress. well, ok. this shouldn't be stressful. i call her, she points me in the right direction and voila! there is cuteness. i really love it, and i'd be in green if it's the one. yay!
so go check it out. lemme know what you think.
kathleen is in the fun part of planning. this is when you get to do specific research, cuz you mostly know what you want, and you actually make decisions. there's stress, but it's mostly the "will my cousin betty be offended that she's not making fruitcake for the wedding?" and "can i justify paying $80 for pretty flip flops?". usually though, a good mother of the bride/attendants will say, "don't worry about cousin betty!" and "just get the flip flops!". this lasts the longest of the wedding stages, for me about 6 months. everyone gushes over you and you're super excited about the wedding.

but please, people. couldn't we all agree to get married one at a time? i don't know how much more of this i can take....

(to the three of you, i'm totally not serious. i will ALWAYS pick up the phone (unless i miss the call. and then i'll call you back!)/answer the email/make comments on blogs when you need me to. i promise. mwah!)

this is one of those posts that makes me realize the rest of the human creation, culture, and civilisation is completley and utterly nuts and deformed.
But in a good natured caustic way, because it's not like anyone is impaling infant babies on sticks or anything.

dude, there is really only one hard-and-fast rule about weddings, that we have adopted as all our friends have gotten married. that rule is: Don't Fuck With The Bride. now that I am going to be the bride, I am looking forward to watching my fiancé take people aside and tell them, "No, seriously: don't fuck with her. She will cut you."

The wedding industry is weird. It's this bizarre siren-song of rose petals and silver foil and Your Special Daaaaaaaaaay! It's a lot like an art opening thus far: there's a crapload of work to do, and a lot of long-term preparation, and a good deal of craziness...it's a party and a performance in one, and no one wants to be the girl who people talk behind her back about how tacky and boring her wedding was.

The dress is cute, but the bubble hem concerns me...on a girl larger than, say, you, the overall effect could be a little Weeble-ish. Just say no to bubble hems.

3/22/08. So mote it be. And I may need you and Mom to check a venue in Leechburg for me some time in the next week, before her surgery.

And then, with that out of the way, I will be so totally calm...
